Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I see any appointment availability on Handshake?
Graduate Career Center appointments are only visible to students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) and the School of Continuing Studies (SCS). If you are not enrolled in either a GSAS or SCS program, you will not be able to see our appointments and will need to find your school’s assigned career center.
If you are a current student in GSAS or SCS but can’t see appointment, chances are our coaches are fully booked. Some weeks in the semester are busier than others, so coaching availability may vary.
We recommend checking back every week to see updated availability in the event that we may have last minute cancellations or added time slots.
How many appointments can I book with the career center?
Enrolled students have unlimited access to career coaching during their time at Georgetown. However, we ask that students do not book more than two appointments a month to allow others the chance to meet with us.
What jobs should I be applying to?
Our coaches will not tell you what career path to take. Instead, we will guide you towards the right resources and facilitate active exploration, reflection, and research to help you make the most informed decision about your future career.
When should I start looking for jobs?
The job search can be long and extensive. Our advice is simple: start early and plan strategically. At a minimum, begin the process six months prior to your desired start date (i.e., if you’re looking to start a full-time role in June, start the process in January). A successful job search takes time and breaking it into phases can help you stay organized and proactive. Here’s a suggested breakdown:
- Month 1: Reflection and Industry Research
- Month 2: Active Job Search and Compilation of Open Positions
- Month 3: Revising Materials & First Round of Applications
- Month 4: Waiting Period and Continued Applications
- Month 5: Screenings & Interviewing
- Month 6: Negotiations & Offers
The hiring process involves multiple steps, both for you and the recruiter. Understanding the timeline helps you stay ahead of deadlines, reduce stress, and maximize opportunities.
Where can I find jobs?
Check out our Job Boards and Industry Resources page for more information on where to find relevant and current job postings.
Can you connect me with a specific recruiter/employer?
We do not directly provide recruiter or employer information. Coaches will help you develop appropriate strategies for the job search, share best practices, and provide relevant resources for your networking and relationship-building needs.
I’m an international student and need a job. What can I do?
Our center can help you with your job search and career-related concerns. Check out or International Resources page for tools relevant to your job search needs.
Specific questions about immigration policies, timelines, and documents should be directed to the Office of Global Services. All international students should have an assigned International Student (IS) advisor.
